I did my Ph.D in microbiology at University of Helsinki (1999), and since then I have been working at VTT Ltd Finland, currently as Senior Scientist in Plant Biotechnology and Metabolomics team. I am specialized in plant biotechnology, including establishment, cultivation and characterization of plant cell cultures, especially of Nordic berry species. My special interest is to characterize and develop our plant cultures for production of primary and secondary metabolites with commercial value (bioactivity, colour, flavour etc.). I have expertise in scaling-up processes enabling large scale production of plant cells and their metabolites for industrial applications. As microbiologist, antimicrobial activities of plant material and cell cultures against human pathogens have been my special interest. Recently I have also focused on new research field including exploitation of plant waste from nature, gardens and industrial side-streams aiming to valorise the waste.
