Götz Schlotterbeck has a long lasting experience in analytical chemistry. Since 20 years he works in the field of high-end analytical method development in pharmaceutical, chemical and natural product research. After academic training at university of Freiburg (D), Sussex (GB) and Tübingen (D) he started his professional career in pre-clinical research at F. Hoffmann- La Roche in Basel (CH). At Roche he focused on NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry hyphenated to chromatography. During this time as a scientific project leader (1997-2010) he developed miniaturized and high sensitive NMR technologies for high-throughput analysis. He introduced a combined NMR and LC-MS approach for quality control of the Roche compound depository and was leading Roche's metabonomics and metabolomics activities in pre-clinical research. Beside his dedication to metabolic profiling by NMR and mass spectrometry he investigated and structurally characterized endogenous biomarkers in various types of bio-fluids in pre-clinical studies. In addition he continued his research activities in the field of vitamin research and carotenoids.
In 2010 he intensified his professional career even more towards applied research and also education. Götz was appointed as Professor for analytical chemistry at FHNW.
His research focuses on non-targeted and targeted metabolic profiling of natural products and biomarker identification and quantification in biofluids by spectrometric and spectroscopic analytical techniques. In particular his group develops new analytical solutions for high-end chromatography mass spectrometry applications in metabolomics.
Since 2011 the team of Götz Schlotterbeck conducted industry funded projects in the field of public health utilizing the new technology of automated dried blood spot (DBS) analysis by Tandem LC-MS technologies. Benefits of minimal invasive blood sampling by DBS were combined in the analytical department of FHNW with high-end analytical technologies like LC-MS/MS or GC-MS to establish procedures for direct quantification of endogenous metabolites and biomarkers in dried blood samples. Analysis of micro nutrient status reflecting health status of individuals is of special interest to the group of Götz Schlotterbeck. He collaborates with public and private partners to establish validated automated analytical protocols for investigation of DBS to assess public health. Analytical databases of biomarkers and endogenous metabolites were built up.
