My research focus lies in identifying biomarkers of age-related changes which are linked to nutrition and oxidative stress. Since the aging process and the risk for/progression of chronic diseases can be influenced by the diet and by oxidative stress my aim is to better understand the impact of these processes on biological systems and to identify mediators of their effects. I am studying micronutrients, the antioxidant status, oxidative stress and the metabolic profile in form of biomarkers. For this I use methods which are suitable for application in human studies and are specific and easy to apply in blood and other human samples such as dried blood spots.
Currently I am involved in two large-scale integrated projects supported by the European Commission: MARK-AGE and Frailomic. MARK-AGE was a population study aiming to identify a set of biomarkers which, as a combination of parameters, might measure biological age better than any marker alone. Here I was especially interested in different vitamins and markers of oxidative stress. Frailomic aims to identify blood biomarkers of the processes that turn frailty into disability.
