THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON CAROTENOIDS
Registration and abstract submission are open...
Funded by EU projects within FP5, FP6 and FP7, my research was and still is focused on biomarkers of status and effects of bioactive food components, including carotenoids in human subjects. Studies included also patients with impaired renal function (in close collaboration with the Medical University of Graz) and, previously, also cystic fibrosis patients (very first beta-carotene supplementation trial in these patients). We have a long-standing expertise in planning and conducting human intervention studies, including dietary modifications and kinetic studies. In collaborative studies, we have analyzed large volumes of samples, using HPLC methods for the quantification of vitamin A, E and carotenoids (combined fluorescence and UV detection method) and vitamin C (electrochemical detection) as well as biomarkers of oxidative stress such as resistance to oxidation of LDL and NF-kappa B activation in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Within the EU project BIOCLAIMS, focusing on biomarkers for health claim support, we have established a cohort of 1300 study subjects aged 18 to 85 years who were comprehensively characterized for dietary intake, nutritional status, vascular function and a large panel of clinical and functional tests, resulting so far in >600 variables in each subject (BIOCLAIMS cohort) and a biobank with different types of human samples which will be very useful for upcoming study questions, including possibly those that could be developed within EUROCAROTEN.
